Malawi Red Cross empowers the 2019 Floods survivors’ livelihood.
In a bid to boost the livelihood of the 2019 Flood survivors, Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has distributed One thousand and Fifty Goats to 210 households that were most affected by the 2019 Floods. Each household received five goats (4 she goats and 1 he goat).
Speaking in Chikwawa on Tuesday during the distribution, Secretary General for MRCS McBain Kanongodza said the goat distribution is part of the MRCS 2019 Floods recovery program where among others MRCS has constructed 373 houses, distributed cash and seed, constructed toilets in schools and drilled boreholes.
Kanongodza said MRCS takes a holistic approach in disaster response, hence the coming in of the one-year recovery program after 3 months response phase where over 15,000 households received food and non-food items.
One of the beneficiaries from the area of Traditional Authority Maseya in Chikwawa, Nolifa Nthutha thanked MRCS for the donation of the five goats. She said this is the first time that an organization is distributing five goats to a household for a pass on program. She pledged to take good care of the goats.
The goats have been distributed under a goats pass on program where after reproduction the five goats would be given to another household which will then pass on to another beneficiaries until all the floods affected communities have been reached.
The Global Red Cross movement partners led by Danish Red Cross and local donors such as Toyota Malawi, NBS bank and Bishop Mackenzie International School supported the program that was being implemented in Chikwawa, Mulanje, Phalombe and Nsanje districts.
